Tummy Tuck
Liposuction that is performed in the abdominal area is often
referred to as a tummy tuck. Ideally, a good tummy tuck candidate
will not seek the cosmetic procedure for weight loss purposes
but simply to remove the isolated area of fat that has been
unresponsive to diet and exercise. Tummy tucks are a popular
cosmetic surgery choice, especially as a shift in fashion
bares midriff and popular celebrities have been exposing a
tight, flat mid section. Liposuction is the most requested
cosmetic procedure and many people have benefited from the
results a tummy tuck can provide.
A tummy tuck candidate will first need to visit a cosmetic
surgeon to undergo a complete evaluation to assess if that
individual can benefit from a tummy tuck without having a
high risk for complication. Tummy tucks are performed safely
on a normal basis, however, each individual possesses varying
factors that will influence the way the cosmetic procedure
results. A qualified tummy tuck surgeon will be able to understand
if the candidate's risk factors are too great and if the candidate's
goals can be achieved through a tummy tuck.
Depending on how much work needs to be performed during a
tummy tuck procedure will determine if the tummy tuck will
be a full tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck. During a mini tummy
tuck just the lower abdominal wall skin is tightened, opposed
to the entire abdominal skin and muscle in a full tummy tuck.
Since only the lower abdominal wall skin is tightened during
a mini tummy tuck there will be a smaller incision, and thus
a smaller scar as a result.
While the result of a tummy tuck can be drastic a tummy tuck
patient will understand there are limitations to cosmetic
procedures and be realistic about what can occur with it.
Having a high self-esteem prior to the tummy tuck is important
because patients should not seek cosmetic procedures to feel
better about him/herself. A tummy tuck can allow an individual
to feel better but the patient should feel secure to begin
with.
In some instances a tummy tuck may be combined with additional
cosmetic procedures to better enhance the patient. Patients
should fully understand the risks involved with the cosmetic
surgery prior to committing to the tummy tuck. A qualified
and reputable plastic surgeon will not proceed with a tummy
tuck unless confident that the patient is prepared to undergo
the procedure in a safe manner.
Tummy tucks will require a certain degree of downtime while
the patient heals and allows the tummy tuck to take its full
effect. Within a few weeks of a tummy tuck the patient should
be able to resume most normal activities, excluding lifting
heavy objects and participating in sports until the plastic
surgeon permits that the individual has recovered. A tummy
tuck can have lasting results as long as that individual maintains
a healthy eating and exercise routine.
