Fat Injection
Fat injections are used to transfer unwanted fat from one
body area to an area that is able to benefit from that fat.
Some patients desire a more full appearing or defined feature
with the fat injection or to have the fat fill any lines and
wrinkles. The surgeon will evaluate each patient before evaluating
if fat injection cosmetic procedure will be beneficial.
The patients own cells are used for the fat injection and
depending on how much fat that patient has available will
determine how large of an area can be treated with the fat
injection. Patients with a small amount of body fat may not
have enough available fat to be used for the fat injection.
When patients undergo fat injection it is normally suggested
that they receive multiple treatments in order to achieve
the desired look.
There are benefits and risks to every procedure and fat injection
is the same. Fat injection candidates are able to benefit
from fat injection due to the lack of any unnatural substances
being put into the body opposed to other cosmetic procedures.
In addition, fat injections are performed in a short amount
of time and will provide benefits that can last for months
or permanently depending on the patient.
Fat injections provide results that are similar to the collagen
injection treatments but many patients are allergic to collagen
and the fat injections provide a great alternative with the
same results. When undergoing a fat injection the patient
will not have the possibility of rejecting the injection that
can occur with collagen. Cosmetic procedures that achieve
a younger, smoother look, such as a facelift or another type
of surgical procedure is associated to a much longer downtime,
recovery, and discomfort and fat injections can be an alternative
to invasive procedures.
The fat injection plastic surgeon will inject the site where
the fat cells will be extracted with an anesthetic prior to
administering the fat injection. The doctor will then begin
the fat collection for the fat injection. The fat cells collected
will need to have the excess fluid removed so that it can
be injected into the area to benefit from the fat injection.
Each patient should have a realistic view on what type of
benefits fat injections may or may not result in. There will
be varying degrees of longevity provided from fat injections
with each patient and there are limitations to where a fat
injection can be administered. Being as specific as possible
with the plastic surgeon on the goals and intentions of undergoing
fat injections will help the plastic surgeon and the fat injection
candidate understand the best cosmetic option for them.
