Collagen Injections
Collagen injections were FDA approved in 1981 to fill in
"contour deformities" in the skin, including acne
scars or wrinkles. Collagen injections are made from the connective
tissue of cows or pigs in order to create cosmetic benefits.
People wishing to continue seeing the benefits of the collagen
injections will need to periodically repeat treatments to
keep up the effects. Not everyone will be a strong candidate
for collagen injections but a qualified cosmetic surgeon will
be able to properly assess a candidate that will greatly benefit
from the procedure.
Collagen injections are desired by a lot of people that are
looking to cosmetically enhance their physical attributes
while avoiding an invasive procedure that requires a long
recovery. A small amount of collagen is injected into the
areas to be treated. The collagen injections are able to raise
the areas of the face that have aged into fine lines and wrinkles
to create a more even surface. Depending on the severity of
the wrinkles, lines, and scars to be treated will determine
what type of collagen injection will best treat the patient.
Some people will have bad reactions to collagen so skin tests
will need to be performed prior to scheduling a collagen injection.
The collagen injections can last anywhere from several months
up to a couple years, depending on the individual. It is important
to have a qualified doctor give the collagen injections.
Patients are able to get collagen injections quickly and
safely and have immediate results. Some patients desire a
fuller lip or nasolabial and can fulfill that with collagen
injections. Every patient will need to be evaluated in order
to assess the benefits and the risks of having collagen injections.
Since patients will continue to age the number of collagen
injections needed to keep up with a desired appearance may
need to increase as well. Typically, patients will have three
or four collagen injections every year for touchups.
There are few side effects associated to collagen injections.
Some patients will experience slight swelling at the site
of the collagen injection, along with some bruising, however
it will normally subside within a few hours. Allergic reactions
can cause itching or redness but a qualified cosmetic surgeon
will thoroughly evaluate each individual to make sure that
they are not allergic to the collagen injections prior to
scheduling the cosmetic procedure.
